Elounda’s history goes back in time to the city of Olous, one of the first prehistorical settlements of the island located in Poros. Today, even though that the ancient city of Olous can be found on the seabed, its ruins are easily visible during the summer months. In ancient times, it was a very important city-state which met significant commercial and economical bloom till the first pirate raids by Arabs. In 1579, and while it was still occupied by Venetians, the first fortifications were made in Spinalonga in order to protect the local harbor and trade salt in safe. However, its growth paused during the upcoming Turkish occupation, while in the early of 20th century the first seaside settlements were established. The last few decades, Elounda has experienced a strong tourism boom, offering numerous spectacular beaches and hotel facilities. Striking example is the beach of St. Luke -known as Kolokytha– which offers clean blue waters, white sand, and unique scenic landscapes.
