Description

Alexakis is the largest family-owned-and-run winery in Crete. Alexakis services leading Greek wine producers with a storage capacity of 16 million liters. It exports to the U.S.A. with the Alexakis brand, and to Russia and China with private labels. Working very closely with grape growers all around the island, and especially with those in the Heraklion region, we produce award-winning bottles, acknowledged not just in Crete and Greece, but also on the world stage. At Alexakis, we take great pride in being able, through our work, to honor our ancient land, its magnificent past, and its extraordinary mosaic of cultural influences. The Alexakis team and its award-winning wines welcome you to Greece, to Crete, to Heraklion and to Alexakis winery!

The visit lasts as long as necessary and comprises:

  • A guided tour of the winery’s production facilities
  • A guided tour of a vineyard cultivated with white variety Malvasia aromatica covering an area of 3 stremma (0.74 acres or 0.3 ha)
  • The projection of a video produced by Wines of Crete about Cretan vineyards and their wineries. The projection is held in one of the two wine-tasting halls with a capacity of 30 or 50 participants in the following languages: Greek, English, French, German, Russian or Chinese
  • A wine-tasting (during the video projection) of five Alexakis labels:
    • Alexakis Kariki (red) 2013 – Mandilari and Kotsifali grape varieties
    • Alexakis Kariki (white) 2015 – Assyrtiko and Athiri grape varieties accompanied by traditional Cretan rusks
    • Alexakis Hatiri (white) 2015 – Malvasia aromatica grape variety
    • Alexakis Vidiano (white) 2015 – Vidiano grape variety
    • Alexakis Kotsifali-Syrah (red) 2013 – Kotsifali and Syrah grape varieties
  • A meal with traditional Cretan dishes proposed and prepared by the restaurant Peskesi, Authentic Cretan Cuisine in Heraklion:
    • Salads, Peskesi salad (wild greens and seasonal vegetables) or Sautéed stamnangathi (cichorium spinosum, a Cretan species of wild dandelion)
    • First course, “Sympetherio” (a local dish of cooked seasonal vegetables) or Kochlioi stifado (snails stewed with onion and tomatoes)
    • Main course, Boned kid slow-cooked for 6 hours with yoghurt or “Kraiokakavo” (a Μinoan recipe): slow-cooked pork with honey and thyme, served with a purée of pulses

The opening hours of the winery’s shop adhere to the same time frame. Our winery is also accessible to the disabled.
